Only Fools and Horses fans can’t stop calling Nicholas Lyndhurst ‘Dave’ as new Frasier teaser drops

"It's Only Fools and Frasier!"

Only Fools and Horses fans can’t stop referring to Nicholas Lyndhurst as ‘Dave’ as a new teaser for the Frasier reboot drops online. Lyndhurst, 62, played Rodney Trotter in the BBC show from 1981 until the final episode in 2003.

As Only Fools fans will know, Rodney was famously called ‘Dave’ by close pal Trigger (Roger Lloyd Pack) throughout the show and is still a running joke despite it ending nearly 20 years ago. But Lyndhurst has now gone stateside as he will appear in the popular US sitcom Frasier.

Frasier, a successful spin-off of Cheers, sees Kelsey Grammer revive his role as psychiatrist Dr. Frasier Crane 19 years after the show ended. Lyndhurst will play Frasier’s old college friend-turned-university professor Alan Cornwall, as he joins the 10-episode season.

Lyndhurst’s voice as Alan Cornwall is accentuated upper class and perhaps more high pitched than we’re used to in his role as the dim-witted South East Londoner. He also looks very suave. The official Frasier Instagram page posted a new clip of Lyndhurst in character as Cromwell on Thursday (October 5), and it immediately grabbed the attention of his fans.

In the short video, Lyndhurst wears a chequered shirt underneath a waistcoat and a brown suit jacket. He stands causally with a drink in one hand and the hand in his pocket. The actor looks directly at the camera and gives off a cheeky smile before letting out a big sigh.

He then looks likes stressed as he takes a sip of his drink before looking at the camera once more, before walking away. Taking to the comments, one person wrote: “Alright Dave!”, while a second stated: “My name is not Dave, it’s Rodney!”

A third stated: “Gordan Bennet, it’s Rodders”, as another joked “He’s got a GCE in Art, that’s for sure”, referring to his Only Fool character.

“What a plonker”, joked another, while one person wrote: “Only Fools and Frasier!”. “An incredible actor! Audiences are in for a treat!”, added another.

The new take on Frasier begins streaming in the UK on Friday, October 13. This autumn marks 30 years since the original series premiered on NBC. It became one of the most successful sitcoms of all time, with 107 Emmy nominations and 37 wins – the most all-time wins for any comedy series.

New episodes in Frasier’s 10-episode season will come out every Thursday. Paramount will also air the first two episodes of the new Frasier show on CBS on October 17, according to a press release.
