That ’90s Show Makes Kitty’s Dog Mystery Weirder

One of That '70s Show's greatest unsolved mysteries was the fate of Kitty's dog Schatzi, which is made even stranger by 1 That '90s Show scene.

That ‘90s Show subtly references Kitty’s dog Schatzi from That ‘70s Show, but makes the mystery surrounding his fate even more peculiar. After starting menopause in That ‘70s Show season 5, Red decided to cheer Kitty up by getting her a dog, hoping it would help relieve her sadness over not being able to have more children. Kitty immediately fell in love with the little Dachshund that she named Schatzi, but the dog followed a common sitcom trope by frequently disappearing from That ‘70s Show and inexplicably reappearing. Schatzi’s fate thus became one of That ‘70s Show’s greatest mysteries, which That ‘90s Show expands on.

After being absent for a long period of time, Kitty’s dog Schatzi returned and disappeared for good in the season 7 episode “It’s Only Rock and Roll.” While Red once referenced that Schatzi liked to hide underneath the Forman house, his disappearance at the beginning of That ‘70s Show season 7 was never explained, with the characters never mentioning Kitty’s beloved dog again. Since That ‘90s Show picks up over 15 years after That ‘70s Show’s finale, it makes sense that Schatzi would not return in the sequel series, but there is an odd reference to the dog that brings the mystery of his disappearance back into question.

Kitty Doesn’t Reveal What Happened To Schatzi, But Still Kept His Treats

While it’s safe to say that Schatzi passed away before That ‘90s Show season 1’s timeline, it’s still peculiar that the original sitcom never confirmed what became of him. That ‘70s Show seasons 7 and 8 failed to mention whether Schatzi had died, been given away, ran away, or was secretly still around, with the matter of his fate remaining an unanswered question in That ‘90s Show. However, for the first time since his disappearance in That ‘70s Show, a subtle Easter egg in That ‘90s Show confirms that Kitty did, indeed, own a dog, even if Schatzi isn’t mentioned by name.

When Jay needs to hide the gang’s stash, he places the bag in a tin of dog treats, explaining that it’s the perfect hiding place because the Formans “don’t have a dog anymore.” While Kelso’s son Jay is holding the box, Kitty takes it away while sadly remarking that they can give it away because they no longer have a pet. That ‘90s Show’s scene thus reveals that Kitty kept Schatzi’s dog treats long after he was gone, but oddly still fails to solve the mystery of what happened to Schatzi and exactly how long it has been since they last had him.

No, Eric Didn’t Kill Schatzi In That ’70s Show

That '70s Show

Schatzi’s disappearance in That ‘70s Show season 7 led many to believe that Eric Forman had killed the family’s pet. Earlier in “It’s Only Rock and Roll,” Eric accidentally knocked over a Buddha statue, which landed on Schatzi and caused him to stop barking. However, the end-credits scene of the episode confirmed that Schatzi survived the unfortunate accident, as Kitty’s dog was seen joining That ’70s Show‘s characters the Circle shortly after the event. As such, it wasn’t Eric who caused Schatzi to disappear from the sitcom. As more mysteries from the original series are solved, Kitty will hopefully be able to clarify the circumstances of the dog’s fate in That ‘90s Show‘s future.
