Only Fools and Horses prop to sell for thousands after being rescued from bin

Only Fools and Horses fans will now be able to grab themselves a piece of the BBC sitcom’s history.

A long-lost prop, discovered and rescued from a recycling bin, is going under the hammer and is expected to reach a price tag of several thousand pounds.

An original bottle of Peckham Spring Water, which was featured in a 1992 Christmas special for the show, will be sold by Auctioneum of Bristol.

The bottle was kept after filming by a camera operator working in the studio and was thought to be of value until its owner realised it was from Only Fools and Horses.

Peckham Spring Water appeared in the festive episode Mother Nature’s Son during which Del Boy (Sir David Jason) hatchets a scheme to pay off his mortgage.

After visiting a health food shop, and marvelling at the astronomical prices, Del Boy and Rodney (Nicholas Lyndhurst) decide to get in on the action and develop their own wellness product – a bottle of water.

Del Boy starts a production line in his flat and fills the bottles with water from his tap, despite selling it as mineral water that comes ‘from an ancient and natural source.’

Earlier this year, a 1972 Reliant Regal believed to be one of only half a dozen ‘star cars’ to feature in the hit comedy also sold at auction, reaching £19,350.

The car in question came from a private collector who had owned it since 2021, though it had also been previously owned by John Mansfield from the BBC. The eye-catching yellow paintwork is present and correct, as is the iconic Trotters Independent Trading Company logo on the side.

It came complete with roof rack, suitcase, fluffy dice and even an inflatable doll which made an appearance in Series 6 of Only Fools and Horses, during the second episode ‘Danger UXD’.

The original series, written by the late John Sullivan, was broadcast on the BBC from 1981 until 1991, with sixteen sporadic Christmas specials aired until the end of the show in 2003.

It featured the colourful escapades of market trader Del Boy and his less streetwise younger brother Rodney Trotter as they went through the highs and lows of life trying to become rich.
