PBS Call the Midwife star Pam Ferris looks worlds away from Sister Evangelina in throwback pictures from 30 years ago with pal David Jason

The iconic actress has starred as a wide range of impressive characters

While legendary actress Pam Ferris has been absent from our screens in recent years as she enjoys a peaceful life in a quiet Kent village with her Notting Hill star husband, she has an impressive catalogue of credits. Her most recent big role was starring as Sister Evangelina in the BBC hit show, Call the Midwife.

The character died in the season five finale after dealing with several health issues and eventually suffering a stroke. The actress reportedly left the show due to a hectic production schedule and a lack of time for her personal life.

She told Radio Times: “Making the decision to leave Call the Midwife was a wrench. Because I then became involved with telling the story to the best of my ability, there was no time to feel regret. I’ll miss my friends on set – in front of and behind the camera – and I’ll miss my habit which is so well worn and comfortable. But I shan’t miss my wimple!”

The TV icon has delighted audiences young and old with her roles in films and shows over many years, and is perhaps best known for playing Miss Trunchbull in the 1996 film version of Roald Dahl’s classic book, Matilda.

Pam also starred as the lovable Ma Larkin, opposite David Jason as her husband, in the ITV series The Darling Buds of May back in the 1990s. In forgotten pictures with her co-star, Pam looks completely different from her other roles, showing her impressive range.

The actress also starred in Where The Heart Is, and Rosemary & Thyme, in which she played a sleuth alongside Felicity Kendal. She even starred in the hit show Gavin & Stacey as Smithy’s mum.

Although Pam’s time on Call the Midwife was seemingly a rosy experience for her, she did on one occasion run in to difficulties. Pam revealed whilst playing popular on-screen character Sister Evangelina in BBC’s Call the Midwife, she fell off her bike and then needed a knee operation.

The Welsh actress has recalled the moment the bike caused her some major trouble, the Daily Star reports. She said: “Those bikes were really heavy and my shoes were so big on me that they didn’t allow me to turn the bike because my foot would hit the front wheel.

“Add in darkness and cobbles and puddles with holes underneath that you didn’t know about and it was a risk to life and limb – in my case to my cruciate ligament.”

The star added: “I ended up having to have an operation on my knee. But I loved it when I was going straight.”
