World David Bowie Fan Convention line up for Liverpool event

An array of special guests who played a role in David Bowie’s career are set to make an appearance

The line up for the first ever World David Bowie Fan Convention has been announced.

The event, hosted in Liverpool in June, will see panels, live performances and a glitzy Bowie Ball to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of one of Bowie’s greatest albums. The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars was released in 1972 and the ambitious inaugural global convention will mark 50 years since the iconic album was released.

Headlining the city-wide weekend event will be Bowie-classic-singing drag artist, Jonny Woo. He will be joined by hula-hoop artist, Natasha Moonshine, dancer Joshua Hubbard, performance artist Pretentious Dross, Liverpool’s own Eat Me Club and party-starting specialists Sonic Yootha.

The convention brings Bowie’s story back to Liverpool, a city the artist played in numerous times throughout his ground-breaking career. In April 1967 he performed with The Riot Squad, on board the famous Royal Iris, a ferry that ran regular music cruises up the River Mersey. Bowie’s last appearance in Liverpool was in August 1997, with the arena-filling icon performing for a relatively intimate crowd of 2,000 people at the Royal Court Theatre.

Organised by the David Bowie Glamour fanzine and Liverpool music festival producers, Sound City, the event will bring fans closer to the truth behind the legend with the chance to meet guitarist and band leader for over 20 years, Carlos Alomar and long-standing bassist/vocalist, Gail Ann Dorsey. The last surviving member of Spiders From Mars, drummer, Woody Woodmansey is also confirmed to attend and meet fans amongst an array of other special guests who played a role in Bowie’s five-decade long career.

Thom Kidrin, co-creator of Bowie World said: “In honour of David’s 75th birthday and the 50th anniversary of Ziggy Stardust, we are excited to sponsor the Bowie Ball and place a spotlight on how David was such a visionary in furthering music and fan engagement via technology.

“In this milestone year we will introduce initiatives to allow fans to utilise today’s advanced technology, which David would certainly be embracing, to experience and capture David’s excitement and foresight, just as he was helping to shape the future of the music and entertainment industry over 20 years ago.”

At the event’s heart is a glamorous Bowie Ball, encouraging ticket holders to spare no modesty or make-up and bring their favourite era of Bowie to Liverpool’s Saturday night streets. The David Bowie World Fan Convention comes to Liverpool University’s Mountford Hall from Friday, June 17 to Sunday, June 19, 2022.
