Kel-Tec Sub 2000: Portable, Light, HIghly Effective Firepower

Kel-Tec is one of the most innovative gun makers in the market, as they continually launch various variants for firearms that are comparatively less expensive than the competition. In addition, Kel-Tec is known for providing updated, practical improvements to its initial designs, and here, we will tackle the features of its very own Sub 2000.

Top Features:

The Sub 2000 is a semi-automatic rifle chambered for either the .40 Smith & Wesson or the nine-millimeter luger cartridge. It has a sixteen and one-quarter-inch barrel, made of chrome molybdenum steel that has been button rifled. The gun also has a polymer frame.

The Kel Tec Sub 2000 also has several Picatinny rails molded into its synthetic forend, so owners can easily add tactical accessories such as lasers, lights, and even scopes if they desire.

One unique feature about this firearm is that it can actually fold in half at the middle of the receiver using a special locking device, making it highly portable. The Sub-2000 can actually fit into a backpack or large purse.

When it comes to safety features, the Kel Tec Sub 2000 has a cross-bolt button right above the trigger guard, which needs to be depressed for the gun to fire. It also has a magazine disconnect, meaning that the Sub 2000 cannot fire without a magazine inserted.

The Kel Tec Sub 2000 has a capacity of ten rounds when using a nine-millimeter luger cartridge and eight rounds when using .40 Smith & Wesson cartridges. In addition, Kel-Tec boasts that its Sub 2000 has “superior ergonomics” due to its high-impact polymer construction and textured pistol grip. They also tout that the gun is “ultra-lightweight and compact.”

Cleaning Kit:

The cleaning kit that comes with the Kel-Tech Sub 2000 includes a bore brush, cleaning rod, gun oil, and patches. To clean the gun, you will first need to remove the magazine and make sure that there is no ammunition in the chamber. Next, you will need to pull the charging handle all the way back and lock it into place. Once the gun is locked open, you can then proceed to clean it according to the instructions that come with the cleaning kit.

Performance:

So how does the Kel Tec Sub 2000 perform? In short, it’s an excellent firearm. It’s accurate, lightweight, and portable. Hobbyists were actually really surprised at how accurate it was, especially given its relatively short barrel length. Thanks to its ergonomic design, the gun was also very easy to control and maneuver.

The only drawback of the Kel-Tec Sub 2000 is that it doesn’t have a lot of aftermarket support in terms of accessories and parts. But if you’re looking for a Gun that you can easily take with you on the go, and one that packs a serious punch, then the Kel Tec Sub 2000 is definitely worth considering.

Test Use:

To test the Kel-Tec Sub-2000, you can take it to a shooting range. We recommend you try it with some paper targets at seven yards and see if you can get all ten shots within the bullseye. Then, once you’ve fixed the accuracy and gotten used to the weight, go back to fifteen yards and conduct adjustments.

A user tested the Kel-Tech Sub-2000 and this is their initial feedback:

I started out standing in a static-indoor range lane just learning how to operate the thing. Not that it’s difficult, but its odd configuration means some peculiar controls. Owing mostly to the bottom-of-stock-arm charging handle I had to learn which hand should do what and when for basic manipulations, like sending home the bolt for an initial loading and then what changes when performing a speed reload.

The charger locks up into a notch at the rear-right of the stock arm. After a couple of trials I found that for an initial loading with a locked-open action, you pretty much have to grip the gun up front on the handguard with your secondary hand and slap the charger down with your right hand (similar to how an MP5 works). However, for a reload, it’s best to keep your primary hand on the grip, then with your secondary hand load the mag and reach back to charge the handle, then re-grip the fore-end and fire. For reloads, it’s kind of like running an AK-47. Heh, it’s easier than it sounds. At just over 4 pounds, the gun is light and easy to shoot and manipulate.

The front sight is fixed to the end of the barrel and the rear peep sight pops up into position when you unfold the rifle. It is not terribly difficult to get a proper sight picture, but it’s neither as easy nor as comfortable as doing so with a real rifle. The “stock” is just molded hard plastic and it does not have anything like a smooth, rounded, elevated surface for your cheek to weld. It’s all rather uncomfortable and I immediately found myself wishing for a red-dot optic so that I didn’t have to get my face down quite so far onto the hard, bumpy stock. In fact, my third outing to the outdoor range with the SUB2000 I did mount a red-dot on it, and found shooting it to be far more enjoyable.

The trigger is a bit heavy and not so smooth, but I didn’t notice it causing any problems when running drills. The trigger breaks at about 10 pounds and it has a very plastic feel. The charging spring is pretty darned stiff and you have to charge it like you mean it. The bottom-of-stock-arm placement is a bit awkward, but not a dealbreaker. I soon learned to run it pretty smoothly for basic manipulations.

That folding lock at the rear of the stock is NOT an inviting cheek rest. This is definitely a utility gun and not a fun plinker or main range gun.

When the magazine runs dry, the bolt does not lock back and, instead, you get the “thunk” of a trigger falling on an empty chamber. Reloads are accomplished in much the same way as with a pistol. The mag release is in the same position as for the average pistol and I had no trouble running reload drills, as seen in this video:

Overall, the Kel-Tec Sub-2000 is very impressive. It’s perfect for those looking for something lightweight and portable. It’s also a superb firearm for those who want something that packs a serious punch.

Final Thoughts:

All in all, the Kel-Tec Sub 2000. It’s a great Gun that’s perfect for those looking for something lightweight and portable without sacrificing accuracy or firepower. It’s definitely one of the best backpack guns on the market right now.
