That ’90s Show Had A Secret ’70s Show Character Tribute You Missed

That '90s Show has several Easter eggs and hidden tributes to That '70s Show, and one touching example was brought to set by one of the stars.

That ’90s Show had a subtle tribute to two That ’70s Show characters and the actors that portrayed them. The sitcom sequel saw the return of the Forman residence, with Red and Kitty leading the way for a nostalgia-based spinoff. This meant a lot of familiar sights on the new set, like the old living room sofa now moved to the basement and Kitty’s owl decorations still on the kitchen shelves. There were also some less obvious references to the events and characters of That ’70s Show—many of which were brought to the That ’90s Show set by one of the stars.

That ’90s Show follows Leia Forman as she moves in with her grandparents in Point Place, Wisconsin, for the summer. This, of course, means that Red and Kitty have been a regular and hilarious presence throughout the series, and they bring with them the perfect dose of nostalgia for That ’70s Show. Other characters have also appeared in That ’90s Show cameos, with Eric and Donna accompanying Leia in the first episode, Kelso and Jackie showing up to claim their son, Jay, and Fez popping in every few episodes. Of course, some actors and characters cannot appear, but That ’90s Show has managed to honor them anyway.

That ’90s Show’s Set Includes A Picture With Betty White and Tom Poston

Kitty’s challenging relationship with her parents was the center of a few episodes in That ’70s Show. Bea and Burt Sigurdson were the classic dysfunctional married couple, with Bea frequently nagging Burt (who did his best to hide away as often as possible). They were played in That ’70s Show by acting legends Betty White and Tom Poston, who have both since passed away and cannot reprise their roles in the spinoff. However, eagle-eyed That ’90s Show audiences can spot a picture of Kitty with her dear parents propped up on the living room bookshelf.

This photo, taken in the days of That ’70s Show, had been in actress Debra Jo Rupp’s possession (via Netflix) since the parent series wrapped. She assumedly kept this memento to remember working with such legendary individuals, but when the That ’90s Show crew began putting the Forman home set back together again, Rupp brought it back. Ultimately, it makes sense that Kitty would have a picture of her and her beloved (though complicated) parents in her living room, so the little tribute made a great finishing touch.

When production of That ’70s Show‘s finale wrapped in 2006, several cast members took home mementos from the set. However, according to Kurtwood Smith, who plays Red, no one took as much stuff from the old set as Rupp. She reportedly claimed nearly all of Kitty’s most notable belongings and was responsible for returning them when filming That ’90s Show started. Smith claimed that Rupp “had to rent a van to bring it all back,” speaking of the notorious pea-green chair, glass grapes, and even Kitty’s sewing machine—all items that, like the touching photo of Betty White and Tom Poston, made the Forman home feel genuine.
