Whenever a reboot or a revival happens for a popular series or movie the first question always becomes whether the original cast of characters will return to the production. It’s been a mixed bag in this regard with different series coming back into the mix. Some have fully embraced those who came before and others just move on with a new story. It looks like Netflix’s That 90s Show will do a little of both. The sequel to That 70s Show will see some familiar faces and most of the original cast will return in some shape or form. Original series star Ashton Kutcher is coming back to reprise his role of Kelso and recently he opened up about why it was an easy decision for him to return to Point Place, Wisconsin a couple of decades later.
While speaking with Variety at the premiere of Vengeance, Ashton Kutcher commented on returning to the That 70s Show follow-up story. It doesn’t sound like it was all that difficult a choice. He had nothing but good things to say about the return to set, seeing some old friends, and having a blast filming his parts for That 90s Show. And in terms of how the decision went down when he was originally asked if he would return, Kutcher says that he and wife Mila Kunis, who he met on the series, felt they should do it because of what the show gave them. Check out what Ashton Kutcher had to say:
“Mila and I were contemplating it. We thought, ‘Listen, we’re only in the position that we’re in because of that show, so let’s just go back and do this. We just went back and had fun for a week. It was so random and fun.”
Ashton Kutcher also said that it felt “nostalgic to be back on the set,” and that it felt “bizarre” seeing as how most of the original cast and crew were all there at the same time. He said it made for an odd experience, likely something like a time capsule seeing as how it truly was a return to where his career started. He was also complimentary of the new cast, those who will carry on the torch from the original series.
That 90s Show will set itself in the original That 70s Show digs, the ones that made Ashton Kutcher famous. The daughter of Topher Grace’s Eric and Laura Prepon’s Donna is sent to visit her grandparents for the summer in Point Place and she lives with the timeless Red and Kitty. Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp are back in their original parts and will be co-stars in the series. Callie Haverda is playing Leia Forman and it sure looks like we already have a Star Wars reference in there. While visiting for the summer she’ll end up meeting a new group of basement dwellers, though the stereotypes here are more in line with the decade and generation in question
As for the That 70s Show cast, well in addition to Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis, Topher Grace, and Donna Prepon, Wilmer Valderrama is back as Fez and Tommy Chong will return as Leo. Danny Masterson will not return. It sounds like from what Ashton Kutcher said, his Mark Kelso character and Kunis’s Jackie will have just cameos seeing as how they were on set for only a week. That was pretty much expected from even the original description of the show.
