Call the Midwife Nurse Cynthia Miller star unrecognisable in Death in Paradise role

Bryony Hannah ditched her nun's habit for a more rugged role

BBC’s Call the Midwife has had the nation hooked ever since its first series aired back in 2012, telling emotional and heartfelt stories. The eleventh season aired back in March earlier this year, following the nurses and nuns at Nonnatus House.

The programme has seen a handful of familiar faces featured over the years, with the likes of comedian Miranda Hart and acting legend Pam Ferris. Many of the original cast have since departed the show to star in other TV series and films, including Bryony Hannah.

The actress starred as Nurse Cynthia Miller, a stoical, caring and intelligent midwife. Her character became Jessica Raine’s character, Nursing Sister Jenny Lee’s, confidant and lifelong friend.

Bryony appeared on the show for the first six series, departing Poplar in 2017. But did you know she’s also starred on another BBC One drama?

Back at the beginning of 2021, the actress switched roles from a nurse to a suspect for the tenth series of Death in Paradise. Bryony played Rebecca Morley, an assistant professor of archaeology who joined Roger Harkness (Richard McCabe) on a big dig on Saint Marie.

Her character was described by the Radio Times as “timid, but she is also determined”. Bryony and Richard were also joined by former Skins and The Musketeers actor Luke Pasqualino, who appeared as a PhD student working on the dig.

The episode aired on BBC One on January 14, 2021. Since leaving Nonnatus House, Bryony has also appeared on the ITV crime drama Unforgotten, starring Nicola Walker and Sanjev Bhaskar.
