Only Fools and Horses star shares health update during cancer battle

Patrick warned 'it's not over yet' but admitted he was delighted at the hopeful news

Only Fools and Horses legend Patrick Murray has fans breathing a collective sigh of relief after his latest update amid an ongoing cancer battle. The Mickey Pearce star, 65, took to Twitter to announce that his oncologist had given him a bit of hopeful news following a procedure to fight a tumour in his liver.

Funnyman Patrick began by thanking fans for their kind messages and words of support, and explained that the cancer in his lung was cured while the cancer in his liver was shrinking. And true to form, Patrick added a heartfelt message of thanks to the NHS staff who’ve cared for him since his diagnosis in July last year.

He penned: “Thanks again for all your lovely messages. As you may know, I was diagnosed with lung cancer last July.

“After an op in Oct to remove the tumour I had chemo to help prevent the cancer returning. During this chemo, another tumour was discovered in my liver.

“Luckily for me this cancer was unconnected to the lung cancer and was also treatable. I had a procedure called Tace to deal with this. Last Friday l saw my oncologist.

“She told me the lung cancer was cured and that the tumour in my liver was shrinking. It’s not over yet, but as you can imagine I am over the moon with this latest news.”

Referring to what Only Fools’ fans have guessed is the sitcom’s annual convention, Patrick added: “Thanks to the brilliant doctors and nurses of our NHS, I will hopefully be there, at next year’s convention.”

Patrick played the dim but loveable Mickey, a friend of Rodney Trotter (Nicholas Lyndhurst) and appeared on and off between 1983 and 2003. Mickey’s character in many ways resembled that of Del Boy (Sir David Jason) in his wheeler-dealer ways.

The news of Patrick’s health up-turn comes after reports emerged earlier this year that he had said he wouldn’t see Christmas. Fans, as ever, have been quick to offer messages of support.

Mickey’s diagnosis came not long before co-star John Challis, famous for bringing Boycie to life, died of cancer at the age of 79.
