'Genie, you're free' - The country woke to the sad news that the US comedian and actor was found dead this morning.

The news of US comedian and actor Robin Williams’ death has triggered a huge outpouring of tributes across social media, with people remembering their favourite Williams moments.

Every ‘trending’ phrase on Twitter today is related to the comic genius, including: #RIPRobinWilliams, ‘Good Morning Vietnam’, ‘Dead Poets Society’, ‘Flubber’, and ‘Jumanji’.

The Mork and Mindy star had been suffering with depression and addictions.

In a statement, his wife, Susan Schneider, said she was “utterly heartbroken”.

“This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken,” she said.

“On behalf of Robin’s family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief. As he is remembered, it is our hope the focus will not be on Robin’s death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions.”

The actor starred in almost 50 feature films. Some of his best-loved characters include Mrs Doubtfire, Sean Maguire in Good Will Hunting, the voice of the Genie in Aladdin and Captain Hook.

The Academy’s poignant picture and quote has been retweeted almost a quarter of a million times.

The Oscar winner was found unconscious at his home near Tiburon, California. The 63-year-old’s death is being reported as suspected suicide.
