Only Fools and Horses

Only Fools and Horses 40th anniversary could be snubbed by BBC, says Boycie actor John Challis

The Boycie star said they had heard nothing from the BBC so far, on plans to mark the big anniversary

Only Fools and Horses actor and comedy legend John Challis, who played car dealer Boycie in the unforgettable show , has revealed the BBC has no plans to mark the show’s fortieth anniversary later this year.

The iconic TV show will turn 40 this September, with John Challis revealing to The Sun that the BBC has made no contact with the cast so far.

John himself has been in contact with Sir David Jason, who of course played Del Boy, and with the Only Fools and Horses Appreciation Society about what to do to mark the show’s big birthday.

Speaking to The Sun, John said: “I spoke to David just a couple of days ago, actually, on the phone. He had rung up about something.

“With the 40th anniversary of Only Fools And Horses coming up, there’s a lot going on and a lot of people throwing stuff our way, asking us to do stuff. So we’ve had discussions about what would be a good thing to do.”

He was then asked whether the BBC had been in touch with any plans to mark the anniversary, to which he said: “I haven’t heard anything.

“I would think there would be something going on, I don’t know how they would do it. But I haven’t heard anything at the moment from the BBC. I’d have thought it must be terribly proud of the show.

“It has sold in a lot of places all over the world, it’s very popular. So you’d have thought the BBC would want a great celebration for it, but who knows what’s going to happen.”

Only Fools and Horses first took to our screens on September 8 1981, running for seven series, plus 16 specials.

The sitcom focused on Del Boy and Rodney, who was played by Nicolas Lyndhurst and their attempts to get rich. The Trotter brothers’ wheeler-dealing and slapstick humour is still loved by millions today, with near-daily replays showing on Gold each day.

It remains to be seen if the BBC will mark the occasion later on this year.
