Only Fools and Horses

The Only Fools and Horses episode you probably have no idea about

It was strangely an educational episode explaining all the benefits of oil

Only Fools and Horses ran on our screens for over 20 years.

It remains one of the most iconic comedies in British history with 64 classic episodes bringing out many a chuckle across the nation.

There is one episode however that was only shown on TV as part of a one-off special.

Licensed To Drill is not the typically laugh-out-loud episode like its counterparts.

Made in 1984, it had an underlying educational purpose to it, mainly detailing the versatility of oil.

Rodney and Granddad watch an old war movie but then Del butts in with the catchphrase ‘this time next year we’ll be millionaires’ when talking about oil in the North Sea.

There are a few jokes thrown in but no canned laughter track as Granddad thinks oil comes from ‘the garage.’

Additionally, Del teases Rodney about his two GCEs as he doesn’t know where the slick stuff originates from.

Del goes on to explain that oil comes from fermented prehistoric plants and fossils then brings out a whole plethora of items made from oil.

Del shows the other two a documentary called ‘Maureen’ whilst Granddad falls asleep.

This educational aspect meant the episode was shown in school science lessons across the country but never broadcast.

That was until 2017 when UKTV Gold showcased the 19-minute documentary-style episode.

Nevertheless, there is still the typical Only Fools style attached to it with a few jokes thrown in.

As ever, Del attempts to make a quick buck by buying an oil rig off an odd Scottish bloke called Paddy for £400.

Of course, things don’t go quite to plan.

The episode ends with a Bond-esque theme tune as the trio fight with each other.

It also poignantly marks Grandad’s final appearance in the hit show, played by Lennard Pearce.
