Robin Williams Reflected on His Early Passion for Comedy in High School and College

It’s been eight long years since the world bid goodbye to beloved actor and comedian Robin Williams. His tragic death came as a shock to fans and the entertainment industry alike. However, his legacy of love, kindness, and, of course, humor, withstands time. Prior to his passing, the “Jumanji” actor reflected on his early interest in comedy during high school and college. Ultimately, these led to the long, iconic career that Outsiders are so fond of now.

In an interview with “Pioneers of Television,” the star began his tale detailing a memorable day in high school.

Robin Williams stated it was during a senior high school class review that students could make fun of their teachers. “I could do a pretty dead-on impression of a couple of them,” the comedian shared, “and that was the beginning.”

From there, Williams detailed his transition to an all-men’s college to study political science. However, as we learn in the clip, which you can watch yourself below, it wasn’t long before the star’s career changed.

Humorously, Robin Williams reflected, “But it turns out, the only place the ladies were was the theater classes, specifically the improvisational theater classes.”

You can guess then where the actor and his companions headed.

Obviously, having the ability to meet women was a plus for the icon. Although, he more broadly stated, “That was the beginning of like, ‘Okay, this is a nice place to meet people.’”

Even more importantly though, Williams found that these classes, and the career path he would eventually take, resulted in a lot of laughs, especially when it came to his talents as an improviser.

To conclude, he shared a humorous antidote with the outlet, which was, “Bad news is, is it didn’t help my political science courses.”

Regardless, though, we wouldn’t have it any other way, Mr. Williams.

Robin Williams Charitable Spirit Withstands His Death

Alongside his long, successful career, fans of Robin Williams will also recall that he was frequently known for his charity work and even more famed for not seeking recognition for his kind acts.

Specifically, Upworthy previously stated the film star had raised $50,000 for a Seattle food bank. As we’ve grown to expect, the outlet stated he never once pursued recognition for the deed. Further, according to Fran Yeatts, Executive Director of the food bank, Robin Williams performed shows in 2007 and 2008 in order to raise funds for the organization.

At the time, the executive director shared Robin Williams “really understands there are a lot of people who are really, really struggling.”

He continued, “In spite of the problems that some people have, they can still aspire to great things. I think Robin Williams is a classic example of that.”
