Only Fools and Horses

Only Fools and Horses fans can’t believe one of the show’s stars hasn’t been knighted by the Queen

A fiery debate has been started

Only Fools and Horses burst onto television screens in 1981 and made stars out of the actors that played its now iconic characters.

In the 40 years since it first aired, actors like Sir David Jason, Jon Challis and Sue Holderness have become household names and in the case of Sir David, put forward for the highest honours.

However, there is one actor that Only Fools and Horses fans feel has been hard done by in terms of recognition beyond the show.

On a fan Facebook page, one woman posted a picture of Nicholas Lyndhurst, 59, who played the lovable Rodney on the show.

Along with his picture she commented: “Worthy of becoming a sir.”

And a fiery debate was started.

One man was quick to voice his approval replying: ‘Arise Sir Dave’.

“At the very least a C.B.E,” another agreed.

But Rodney’s proposed appointment was not without controversy.

One man took umbrage with the suggestion writing: “He played a great role of a character but wasn’t the best actor, nor has he gone into being much better.

“Not in the same league as Sir David.”

Another reasoned: ” He was an amazing talent but not quite what David Jason is.

“But I do think he is worthy of becoming a sir. If it wasn’t for David and Nick we would not of had years of laughter.”

Sir David Jason was knighted in 2005 for services to acting and comedy.

He had briefly considered using the phrases, “Lovely jubbly”, “You know it makes sense” or “This time next year, we’ll be millionaires” on his coat of arms.

But he turned away from the wheeler-dealing world of the Trotters for a phrase to reflect his work ethic and six decades in showbiz.

Jason eventually picked the Latin phrase Conata Perficere, which means to achieve what one attempts.

he debate around Nicholas’ appointment raged on in the comments with fans split down the middle by the idea.

One man perhaps summed up the exchange best when questioning what the honour system would get out of Rodney’s elevation.

He said: “I reckon they’ve got enough plonkers in the house of lords do they need another one?”
