ONLY FOOLS AND HORSES star David Jason hinted at the return of the iconic character Del Boy after revealing he would "love" to play him again.

BBC’s iconic comedy show Only Fools and Horses aired from 1981 to 2003 and became one of Britain’s most loved shows. Del Boy (played by David Jason), Rodney Trotter (Nicholas Lyndhurst) and Uncle Albert (Buster Merryfield) became fan favourites and left viewers devastated when the series came to an end. However, David Jason has since hinted at a return for the comedy show as he recently admitted he would “love” to play the character once more.

David told The Sun: “I’ve always loved Del Boy, who is such a wonderful loser, I would love to revisit him, I need someone to write me a script.”

He also said at London’s Royal Albert Hall: “As a show, it’s very important we don’t forget about it, it has a huge following, it fills in that need for an awful lot of people.

“It’s funny, amusing and an identity for most people who watch it, who are working-class and come from where I come from and identify with the idiots who are the Trotters.

“They’re just like the rest of us, a family who have ups and downs.”

Throughout the series, there were various specials that made for some unforgettable TV moments, including the dynamic duo dressing as Batman and Robin and Del falling through the bar door.

A recent poll by The Sun showed viewers voted the Christmas special Heroes And Villains as the nation’s favourite TV show to watch over the festive period.

The iconic episode sees Del Boy and Rodney dressed as Batman and Robin and sees their misadventures unfold.

Only Fools And Horses first aired in 1981 and over the course of 22 years released a staggering 64 episodes.

Despite the episode being rated best by viewers, according to Sir David, the episode was nearly “ruined” due to a number of problems.

David revealed he was “merely a fifth option” when it came to him starring in the role of Del Boy.

In his memoir, David Jason: My Life, he wrote: “Why, perhaps you, dear reader, were considered for the role, too, and turned it down. It would hardly come as a shock to me.”

The actors who were first thought of for the role before Sir David included Enn Reitel, Jim Broadbent, Robin Nedwell and Bill Murray.

David joked that the other actors would have been “terribly sniffly” about being offered the part of the brash and sometimes loud South London market trader, however, he was flattered.

He thought it was more important to be “the best you can be when you get to the front of the queue,” rather than the “first in line”.

Speaking about the other actors who were in the running for the role of Del Boy, David revealed he believed Jim would have been “a much more plausible” casting as Rodney’s brother.

Last year John Challis, who played staple and iconic character Boycie, died at the age of 79 and received a flurry of praise and dedication from fellow co-stars.

Releasing a statement about his friend’s death, David said: “It is with much sadness to hear that John Challis, a dear friend, has passed away.

“He was a wonderful actor, a Gentleman in the true sense of the word, and I know he will be missed by so many.

“We had known each other for well over 40 years when he appeared in the second episode of Only Fools and Horses as Boycie.”
