Kevin Costner Says “The Ability to Say Sorry” Is the Key to His 15-Year Marriage

Yellowstone actor Kevin Costner is the definition of a movie star. With more than three decades in Hollywood, the 64-year-old has starred in and directed some of the most-loved movies including Field of DreamsDances with WolvesThe Bodyguard, to name a few. But for Kevin, there’s one leading role that trumps the rest: fatherhood.

While Kevin and John Dutton have subtle similarities, the two couldn’t be more different when it comes to raising their children. “If [John] keeps making these same mistakes, people will lose faith in who [he is], even as a character,” Kevin recently told IndieWire. In real life, the award-winning actor actually enjoys drama-free days on his Aspen ranch with wife Christine Baumgartner and their blended family. Here’s everything you need to know about Kevin’s life with his wife and kids:

1975: Kevin marries Cindy Silva.

At just 22 years old, a young Kevin married fellow California State University Fullerton student Cindy Silva. On their first official date, Kevin took Cindy to see Funny Girl and then stopped by his house to introduce her to his parents. “I was just really proud that this girl would go out with me,” he told People. “I wanted to show my parents.” Just two years after meeting, the couple wed in an intimate ceremony.

1984: Kevin and Cindy welcome their daughter, Annie.

Anne “Annie” Clayton was born on April 15, 1984. Kevin’s eldest child was the first to follow in dad’s footsteps. While working on Racing Extinction, a Discovery documentary, the Brown graduate founded Sound Off Films, a production company that focuses on documentaries and natural history content production. Since 2015, Annie and her production partner Adrienne Hall have worked with Katy Perry, ESPN, Red Bull, and more. Her dad couldn’t be more proud: “She’s living on her own wits. She’s just a source of pride for me,” he told The Huffington Post in 2014. In 2016, Annie married Danny Cox in a simple outdoor ceremony.

1986: Cindy give birth to their second daughter, Lily.

Less than two years later, the couple welcomed Lily McCall on August 4, 1986. Just like her sister, Lily also has some artistic goals. In addition to a few minor TV roles through the years and being named “Miss Golden Globe” in 2004, Lily is also a folk singer. Oftentimes, her dad joins her on stage with his band Kevin Costner & Modern West. She also performed “Long As I Can See the Light” in Kevin’s film, Black or White. Even though Lily isn’t as keen on being a Hollywood star, her dad Kevin says it’s totally possible. “She’s not a person who is trying to angle how to go faster and go higher and go larger. It’s just not how she’s built. She has an amazing talent. Does she want to give it to the world? I don’t know,” he told The Huffington Post.

1988: The couple has a son, Joseph.

This yeas was singlehandedly one of the most significant of Kevin’s life: It was the year Bull Durham was released and his first son, Joseph “Joe” Tedrick was born. Today, Joe combines his love of music and the outdoors as the owner of Spartan Recording, which uses a mobile recording studio to capture authentic sounds of nature. “The idea is to travel, record in interesting spaces, and record those experiences,” he explained to Solid State Logic.

1994-1996: Kevin and Cindy get divorced, and Kevin welcomes another son with Bridget Rooney.

Although the pair divorced in 1994 due to strain from Kevin’s busy movie schedule, Cindy and Kevin amicably co-parent their three children.

Two years after his divorce from Cindy was made official, Kevin went public with his new girlfriend, Bridget Rooney. During their brief relationship, she gave birth to Liam Timothy on November 15, 1996.

2004: After four years of dating, Kevin marries Christine Baumgartner.

With several years of being single under his belt, Kevin made things official with model-turned-handbag designer Christine Baumgartner by marrying her at his 165-acre ranch in Aspen. But before they said “I do,” the couple called it quits because Kevin wasn’t interested in having more children. “She said, ‘I’m going to wait for you, but not long. When you come to your senses, come back to me,'” he confessed to Parade 2012. “And I did.”

He also revealed to the magazine how he makes his marriage work. “Maybe it’s the ability to say you’re sorry. I know that sounds so simple. If you’re willing to tell somebody that you love them, are you also willing to say you’re sorry? You need to, even when you think you’re in the right.”

2007-2010: Kevin and Christine have three beautiful children together.

Cayden Costner was born on May 6, 2007. Hayes, the couple’s second child, was born on February 12, 2009. Finally, Kevin and Christine welcomed their third (and Kevin’s seventh!) child, Grace, on June 2, 2010.

Today: Despite being a leading man, Kevin cherishes all the moments with his blended family.

When accepting the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 20th Annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards in 2015, the actor thanked his children for helping making his dream of being a movie star a reality: “All the years, all the tears saying goodbye at airports as I headed off to do yet another movie. Their brave faces trying to comprehend the time that I would be away and when I would come home. Hugs that never wanted to end. My children have always been bigger than the movies. They’ve always been more important. It’s because of them that I’ve been able to do what I love.”
